Easter 2012

A story comes from Texas about Christians acting so admirably and possibly out of character that it made the national news. They helped an atheist in financial need. The atheist was flabbergasted by the outpouring of Christian charity. Hateful comments by Christians over his objection to a proposed nativity scene on a public courthouse lawn came to a screeching halt once they found out the guy had a detached retina and couldn’t afford surgery. Local Christians collected money to help him, regardless of his atheistic views. If this doesn’t restore your faith in Christianity this Easter, it should.

One of my favorite quotes by Gandi is  “I like your Christ.  I do not like your Christians.  Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”   Salute to the Christians of Henderson, Texas who provided a stellar example of Christians being tolerant and charitable.

Americans could benefit from a dose of tolerance spread around the country. Our freedoms allow us to complain about everything. We have forgotten about asking what we can do for our country. More often, we ask what our government can do for us.   We define ourselves by our political party and we champion only causes that interest or benefit us. Most choices in life come down to two alternatives -- either to build up or tear down. With greater tolerance of our diversity in race, religion, and politics, Americans would be far better builders.

Our greatest national threat may be our own intolerance. It renders Congress frustrated and unproductive. It makes us ineffective. So pack up your biases and prejudices, like hating gays, minorities, your own government, or thinking you are owed something in life. Carry that sack out to the garbage and dump it. Be tolerant of people everywhere regardless of race, creed, or color. Act like an American true to your heritage.

To those folks who compete without rancor, who live without hate, and who tolerate people who don’t always agree with them, Happy Easter, or Passover, or whatever holiday you celebrate. Celebrate as well the spirit of greater tolerance in America. We need it.
